About the tour

Its construction dates back to 1045 when King Edward the Confessor ordered its construction. What we can see today dates from 1245 to 1517 when the original Romanesque style was replaced by the Gothic, after the remodelling ordered by Henry III. We will begin our visit at our meeting point, the Westminster Abbey entrance at 09:15 a. m. Our guide will take us through the corners of this famous building, a traditional site for the wreaths and burials of the English monarchs and, later, the British monarchs. Since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066, all English monarchs have been crowned at the Abbey, with the exception of Joan I and Edward V. We will see the numerous tombs of various members of the royal family, aristocrats and illustrious personalities such as scientists and poets, including the tombs of Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer and Rudyard Kipling. In recent years, the Abbey has hosted Princess Diana’s funeral and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

Tour was at a very good pace. Guide was insightful and well spoken. Clear and easy to understand. If I had to change anything about this tour I would say that the sign up instructions explained exactly when and where to be for the tour. 9:15 am tour and we needed to show up between 9:05 & 9:15. We waited until after 9:30 for people to show up for this tour. The guide did talk about the Abbey while we waited but it was va very cold and windy morning and we waited outside. I just feel that she should have started the tour at the tour start time.

We really enjoyed this tour. We started off on the exterior and learned about the history of the church. We then went into the church and were able to see the entire building. What a beautiful place to be able to see. Our guide Jane was amazing. She provided us with information in a professional and easy to understand way. Staff knew her which tells me that she has a great reputation in her profession. Definitely need to get a guide to see the Abbey because they can provide you with better information than you can research on your own. Highly recommend this tour!
